Alleged Harasser Asked: 'Yet Suppose I Could Be Madeleine?'
A woman charged with harassing Kate McCann reportedly left her a phone message which posed: "what if I am Madeleine?"
Julia Wandelt, 24, who witnesses stated has consistently claimed she was the disappeared Madeleine McCann, and Karen Spragg are facing charges accused with stalking Kate and Gerry McCann from June 2022 and February this year.
On Monday, the court heard communication data and information recovered from phones logged Ms Wandelt repeatedly demanding Madeleine's mother for a DNA test during the past two years.
Madeleine's disappearance in 2007 - at the age of three during a vacation in Portugal - is considered the most covered child disappearance cases and continues to be unsolved.
'I Do Not Need Money'
Another phone message, played in court, documented Ms Wandelt declaring: "I understand I'm overweight and not pretty like Madeleine used to be, but I feel what I know."
While another instance of Ms Wandelt's one-way conversations with Mrs McCann's recording said: "Suppose there is a small chance that I am she? Then what? Wouldn't that be significant for you?"
"I don't want money, I possess a life here in Poland, I simply desire to discover," she added.
The jury was advised that through emails, mobile messages and communications, Ms Wandelt asked for a genetic test, transmitted early photographs to her phone in a bid to show a likeness to Mrs McCann's disappeared daughter, and claimed to have "memories" from a youth with the McCanns.
The investigator, an investigator with the police force who compiled the evidence, advised the court there "seemed to lack any answers" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt furthermore communicated with acquaintances of the McCanns, based on the call data.
On October 9th, 2024, Mr McCann responded to a phone call from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, saying she had "incorrect contact information."
That day Ms Wandelt deposited a message on Mrs McCann's recording stating "I won't give up and I plan to establish my position."
The court learned the co-defendant established a relationship through digital means with Ms Wandelt before assisting her on a appearance to the McCanns' property in the county in last December.
Phone records showed Mrs Spragg had reached out using WhatsApp to Mrs McCann to state the media had characterized Ms Wandelt as "a crazy person" but that she should be considered genuine in the period leading up to the appearance to that location, Leicestershire, in December 2024.
The court heard communications between the two defendants, in November 2024, considering attempting to obtain Mrs McCann's biological evidence from her bins or from cutlery at a restaurant.
"We must take action," the co-defendant informed Ms Wandelt.
On the night of the appearance to their residence, the defendant dispatched a communication which said: "We're currently sat adjacent to the McCanns' residence with our vehicle dark similar to investigators. I desired to do this with another person I hadn't anticipated I would be doing that with the McCanns."
The case ongoing.
